History of the Shriners
Shriners International is, at its core, a fraternity rooted in Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. It was founded in 1870 in Manhattan when a group of Freemasons, seeking a more lighthearted and fellowship-driven organization, created a fraternity focused on fun and community. Dr. Walter M. Fleming and actor Billy Florence were key figures in shaping the group’s structure, rituals, and emblem, which includes the iconic red fez.
The first chapter, Mecca Shriners, was established in New York City in 1872. The fraternity quickly spread across the U.S. and into Canada, Mexico, and Panama. Today, Shriners International boasts nearly 325,000 members and operates 195 chapters worldwide, including in places like Germany, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
In 1922, the fraternity founded Shriners Hospitals for Children, providing specialized care to children in need, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Shriners continue to support these hospitals through fundraising, volunteering, and assisting families. With 22 hospitals across North America, many of which are connected to top medical institutions, Shriners also contribute to significant medical research and innovations in child care.

Making a Difference in Our Community
The Mississauga Shriners take great pride in giving back to our community through acts of kindness, generosity, and service. We bring comfort to children in local hospitals by donating teddy bears to Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Hospital, and in the past, we’ve played Santa Claus during the holidays to spread joy to young patients. Our dedication extends beyond hospitals—we have sponsored a local soccer team, supported the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts of Mississauga, and provided funding to youth leadership programs like Rainbow Girls and DeMolay. Whenever we see a need, we thoughtfully consider how we can help. Through these efforts, we remain committed to making a lasting impact and strengthening the community.
At the last meeting of 2024, our club suggested setting a goal of donating $1 million in the next 10 years to the Shriners Hospital Transportation Fund. With nine years remaining to achieve this goal, we are well on track thanks to our successful charity fundraisers at Rama Gaming House, raising $100,000 per year toward this incredible initiative. Once we reach this milestone, we will proudly become a Million Dollar Club, solidifying our commitment to making a lasting impact and strengthening the community we are so proud to serve.
Shriners International
Organizational Overview
The Imperial Divan is the governing body of Shriners International, functioning like a corporate Board of Directors. It consists of 12 officers, each elected to the lowest position and advancing one position each year, except for the Imperial Treasurer and Imperial Recorder.
The highest-ranking leader within Shriners International is the Imperial Potentate, who serves as both the president and CEO for a one-year term. During this time, the Imperial Potentate visits Shriner temples (chapters), attends regional meetings, and tours Shriners Hospitals for Children® locations. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board for both Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
A similar leadership structure is followed at the local level in each temple across the globe.
